Wisconsin drivers don't have to worry about state gas taxes going up, at least not this year.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Friday that majority Republicans in the Legislature have ruled out increasing the gas tax this session.
Gov. Tony Evers wanted to raise the state gas tax by nine cents a gallon. He proposed using the additional tax money to build and maintain highways and local roads across the state.
Wisconsin drivers currently pay 33 cents a gallon in state taxes and another 19 cents in federal taxes.
Fitzgerald said the Senate. Finance Committee will amend Evers' transportation proposals during a June 6 hearing. He told the Milwaukee newspaper that fee increases remain on the table.
