Law enforcement officials object to release of undocumented felons from prison without notification

The Illinois Department of Corrections says the state’s Trust Act, which some say makes Illinois a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants, prevents state prisons from holding non-citizens for immigration detainer orders.

Some Illinois sheriffs said last year they safely transferred more than 200 former prison inmates in the country illegally to federal authorities for immigration proceedings, but the new policy from the state doesn’t allow that and they say that puts the public in danger.

Property Tax Relief Task Force report still missing

It’s still unclear when a report from the Illinois Property Tax Relief Task Force will be released, but members from both sides of the aisle have ideas.

Illinois’ property taxes are consistently ranked the second-highest in the nation. Democratic state Rep. Fred Crespo said he wants to cap property taxes in school districts that have more than 50 percent cash on hand.

Nonprofit group gives Rauner’s final budget failing marks

Illinois gets a failing grade for budgeting, according to the nonprofit Volcker Alliance.

Using parameters such as legacy costs, budgeting maneuvers and reserve funds, Illinois got the lowest marks given to any state for its fiscal year 2019 budget.

One area where Illinois excelled was on transparency in budgeting, according to the report.
